RTO PinPoint Quick Start Guide

Installation Pre-Requisites

RTO PinPoint 3.1 is available for download on the RTO web site. RTO Software will provide you with a download link to download the software. You will need to use an RTO-provided download link, user name, and password to download the software and documentation. In order to download the software for evaluation, you must contact RTO Software first.

Licensing Requirements

RTO Pinpoint operates using license keys supplied by RTO Software. You will apply one server license for each server being monitored.  To make your evaluation easy, any agent installed will operate in ‘evaluation mode’ for 14 days without a license. The RTO PinPoint Console provides you with a method to apply licenses to your server agents and update license keys on monitored server. So, initially no license keys are required for the first 14 days. We recommend you take this opportunity to evaluate the product, and determine the best methods of use for your particular application.

Planning

RTO PinPoint is installed on a Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server that should be reasonably high performing with:

*    RAM: 1024 Mb minimum,

*       CPU: 1 Ghz minimum, dual CPU recommended

*       Available Disk Space: 20 Gig

On each monitored server, RTO PinPoint automatically deploys an agent that uses WMI.

WMI and DCOM must be enabled on these servers.

Two MSI files are provided from the download for installation: Console.msi (installs the Analysis Engine and RTO PinPoint Console) and Agent.msi (to allow manual installation of the RTO PinPoint agent). Download all available files.

RTO Pinpoint Console Installation Quick Start

1

Verify .NET Framework

Go to Control Panel, select Add/Remove Programs. Confirm ‘Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1’ is installed. Click Here for the Microsoft download site.

2

Verify WMI/DCOM enabled

WMI and DCOM are services included by default for Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 servers. These services can be viewed in the Services list available from the Control Panel/Administration Tools.  WMI is the Windows Management Instrumentation service.  DCOM is the Distributed Component Object Model that enables communication across networks..

3

Determine Service Account for Use

The RTO PinPoint Analysis Engine uses a user account to communicate to the various servers. This account requires the ability to communicate to the monitored servers using WMI. Generally an administrative account is required.

4

Download Software

Go to the provided download link for downloading the software supplied by RTO Software.

5

Start Install

Run the downloaded Console installation. You will be prompted for various settings including location, service account, and others.

6

Installation

Follow the installation instructions provided in the Installation Guide

7

Agent Installation

You can manually install the agents on the monitored server. However, this is an optional step because the agent is automatically installed when you define the application components. Manual installations can be performed for security reasons or if you want to specifically install it.
