Before you install the product, you should have read the Pre-requisites section of the Overview. Completion of the Planning Checklist will help expedite the installation process. If you require additional resources, download information, or contact information, refer to the Resource Guide.
RTO PinPoint is installed on a Windows 2000 or Windows 2003 server. Since this server will act as a console, analysis engine, and data collection source, it should be reasonably high performing with:
RAM:
1024 Mb minimum
CPU: 1 Ghz minimum
Available Disk Space: 20 Gig
On the servers you monitor, RTO PinPoint requires an installed agent. The Agents use WMI to inspect infrastructure on the installed server and uses WMI for communications.
RTO PinPoint will automatically deploy the agent as part of the Application Definition (refer to the User/Admin Guide for more information). An automatic agent installation is recommended; however, you can manually install the agents (refer to the Manual Agent Installation section of this document). NOTE: If you are monitoring a Windows 2003 server installation, you must manually install the agents.
NOTE: If you already have Microsoft® .Net connection software and a SQL or MSDE server, go to Installation.
Microsoft ®.NET 1.1 Framework
The RTO PinPoint console uses the Microsoft® .NET connection software framework as a container. This must be installed prior to the RTO PINPOINT console installation.
To check for the .NET Framework 1.1 installation, click Start on your Windows desktop, select Control Panel, and then double-click the Add or Remove Programs icon. Scroll through the list of applications. If Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 is listed, you do not need to install it again.
If you do NOT have .NET Framework 1.1, you can download via Windows Download site http://msdn.microsoft.com/netframework/downloads/framework1_1
The RTO PinPoint installer will prompt you that you must install .NET framework if you have not installed it.

Log in to an administrator account for the server where the console will be installed. NOTE: Exit all Windows programs before starting the installation.
Download and run the file Console.msi located through the download link you received with RTO PinPoint 1.3. The RTO PinPoint Console Installation Wizard will launch.

To move forward through the wizard, click Next. You can click Back at any time to return to the previous screen. NOTE: You can cancel the installation at any time by clicking Cancel. If you do so, you will receive a Cancellation message. Click OK to exit the installation process.
Enter your user information and select the user(s) per the settings. NOTE: We recommend the ‘Anyone who uses this computer’ option as shown.

RTO PinPoint Console User Information
We recommend the default Destination Folder, but your IT policies will generally dictate the appropriate location for our application. NOTE: The console will create log files that will increase in size; install on a drive that meets the size pre-requisite.

RTO PinPoint Console Setup
You must describe a user account with administrative rights, as required for successful operation of the product. This account is used for the Analysis Engine Service started on this machine as well as to create the database on the selected SQL server (optional). Because RTO PinPoint uses WMI to query the monitored servers, the account you define to the console should have administrative rights on these machines. At a minimum, the account must be in the ‘User’ group for these machines.
NOTE: Be sure that this account is allowed on the SQL server.
You can type in the user information, click Browse to select a user from a list of current users, or create a new user.

RTO PinPoint Logon
To create a new user, click on Create New User… and complete the fields provided in the New User window.

Create New User
When you have completed the user definition, click on Next. The installation will validate the user entered by attempting to log the user into this machine, and will take you to the Engine Data Store definition. NOTE: If the logon fails, a Logon Failed pop-up will appear. Click OK and validate the account you selected.
RTO PinPoint will install the necessary components and services, and will start the Analysis Engine. The installation allows you to launch the PinPoint console.

On successful completion of the installation you can start the console by selecting on the start menu:
Start
All Programs
RTO PinPoint
RTO PinPoint Console
To manually install the agent, you need:
a Windows™2000 or Windows™2003 server with
